Kuala Lumpur, 20 March 2015: Minister of Finance of Vietnam Mr. Dinh Tien Dung had bilateral meetings with Minister of Finance of Malaysia Mr. Dato’ Seri Ahmad Husni Mohamad Hanadzlah and Deputy Secretary of the US Treasury Mr. Ramin Toloui on the occasion of the 19th ASEAN Finance Ministers’ Meeting.

At the meetings, Minister Dung shared the achievements that Vietnam had made in 2014, with a number of highlights such as stable macro-economy, remarkable growth rate of 5.98%, low inflation and the recovery of growth momentum in all sectors. In 2014 fiscal policy was closely monitored, government revenues exceeded the plan at the beginning of the year and interest rate was kept at low and stable level. In 2015, Vietnam will accelerate economic reform, focusing on restructuring public investment, SOEs (including commercial banks), in which equitization and divestment from non-core business are prioritized.

Minister of Finance of Malaysia Mr. Dato’ Seri Ahmad Husni Mohamad Hanadzlah recognized the achievements that Vietnam had made during the last few years. As the Chair of ASEAN 2015, Malaysia is expected to actively contribute to the development of ASEAN. Mr. Hanadzlah appreciated the establishment of ASEAN Economic Community with the common goal of helping people in ASEAN countries to share the wealth of the whole region.

Regarding the cooperation between Vietnam and Malaysia, Mr. Hanadzlah said that the two countries shared the same opinions in many issues, especially the negotiation of Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Malaysia also hoped that Vietnam will soon connect its stock exchanges with regional stock exchanges to facilitate cross-border transactions in capital markets. The two sides agreed to strengthen investment in the future.

At the bilateral meeting with US Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. Toloui appreciated the economic achievements of Vietnam in 2014 and emphasized that the reforms in institution, investment policy of Vietnam have become stable foundation for growth and export. Mr. Toloui hoped the government of Vietnam will make more efforts in reforming the financial sector and SOEs. The US Treasury noted the consideration of Vietnam to the foreign investor community, particularly the US businesses during the past years. The two sides reaffirmed their commitments to promote the conclusion of TPP negotiation in the shortest time.

On the same day, Minister Dung visited the Embassy of Vietnam in Malaysia. He shared information on the socio-economic situation in Vietnam in 2014 with positive results. He encouraged the Embassy staff to promote the comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Malaysia.
